269 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of applications received for Irish citizenship in 1998 and 1999; the number of those refused; the number granted; the number under review; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4806/00]

It should be noted that the average processing time for an application for a certificate of naturalisation is currently in excess of 18 months. Therefore, it will be some time before decisions are taken on many of the applications made in the past two years.
The number of certificates of naturalisation which issued in each of the years is 352 in 1998 and 416 in 1999. These certificates were in respect of applications received in previous years as well as the year in question.
