Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

98 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the steps, if any, he has taken to ensure that those who incurred the loss of or damage to property during the recent severe flooding in the midlands will be adequately and urgently compensated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5038/00]

As I stated in the reply to Question No. 257 dated 26 January 2000, while there is evidence that some farmers incurred fodder losses as a result of the flooding in the Shannon basin, the general level of fodder stocks entering the winter were satisfactory and there is, therefore, no need for a special fodder compensation scheme. The underlying recurring problem of the Shannon flooding needs to be addressed by the formulation of comprehensive measures involving all the official agencies concerned.
