Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - DIRT Audit Programme.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

258 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance the amount of additional resources allocated to the Revenue Commissioners to undertake work arising from the publication of the Committee of Public Accounts report into DIRT [8743/00]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the DIRT audit programme on which the commissioners have to report to the Committee of Public Accounts. This work is being dealt with as a matter of the highest priority and additional resources have been applied to this work from within the existing staffing resources. In addition, I have also recently approved significant increases in Revenue's staffing resources to deal with audit, investigation, enforcement, taxpayer service and other work, and these will be coming on stream shortly.

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the level of co-operation being received from the financial institutions in progressing the audit of their DIRT liabilities has varied from one institution to another. In general, the co-operation has been satisfactory. Difficulties which Revenue auditors have encountered in the course of their work in some cases have been brought to the attention of the managements concerned and the programme of DIRT auditing is being advanced as speedily as possible.
