Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cycling Promotion.

Ceist:

165 Dr. Upton asked the Taoiseach the steps, if any, his Department has taken to encourage members of staff to cycle to work; and if he will consider a cycling allowance to promote cycling. [8623/00]

To encourage members of staff to cycle to work my Department has provided bicycle racks in a designated secure and sheltered area of the Department's car park located at the rear of 73 Merrion Square. In addition, bicycle spaces are also provided in the forecourt car park of Government Buildings. In both cases, there is easy access for cyclists and secure parking.

In addition, there are shower facilities on the premises to allow staff to freshen up after cycling to work.

My Department has no proposals to introduce a cycling allowance. As a general rule, staff are not paid expenses for travel to and from work irrespective of the mode of transport used.
