Vol. 516 No. 6

Written Answers. - Foreign Conflicts.

Seán Power

Ceist:

181 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on the increased tension between Taiwan and China; if the matter was discussed between his European colleagues; the plans, if any, there are to ease the tension; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9124/00]

Increased tension across the Taiwan Straits is a matter of concern to the Government and to our EU partners. It is the subject of discussion at EU level. The EU supports the principle of "One China" and underlines the necessity of resolving the question of Taiwan peacefully through constructive dialogue.

The recent increase in tension in the area coincided with the holding of an election in Taiwan. I note that, since that election, more moderate statements have been emanating from both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

The EU has strongly urged both sides to avoid taking steps or making statements which increase tension. Through bilateral diplomatic contacts, the Government has also made known its concern to the authorities in Beijing and stressed the importance of reaching a peaceful solution through dialogue.
