Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Asylum Applications.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

240 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the consideration, if any, given by the repatriation unit, immigration division, to representations made by TDs; if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 402 of 8 February 2000, he will give details on obvious developments in view of the case of a person (details supplied); if he will re-consider this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10116/00]

As I advised the Deputy in my response to Question No. 402 on 8 February 2000, section 3(6) of the Immigration Act 1999, requires that in determining whether to make a deportation order I shall have regard to a number of provisions, including any representations made by or on behalf of the person.

I also indicated to the Deputy that I would advise him of the outcome of the case. While the person concerned was informed of my decision, I regret that, due to a misunderstanding, the Deputy was not also informed.

In arriving at the decision to make a deportation order in this case, I considered the matter under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act, 1999, and I do not consider that a re-evaluation of the case is warranted.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

241 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans he has for the provision of suitable facilities for asylum seekers and refugees in County Galway; if he will construct temporary housing in County Galway to house these people; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10117/00]

There are currently two facilities in the County Galway area which provide full board accommodation for 103 asylum seekers. The Eglington Hotel in Salthill provides for 60 asylum seekers while the Dun Gibbons Inn in Clifden provides for 43 asylum seekers.

Negotiations in respect of the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers in a number of other properties in County Galway are in progress. In line with normal practice, I do not propose to release the details until such time as the arrangements in relation to them have been agreed and the relevant formalities concluded with the proprietors.

No decision has been taken to date to construct temporary housing for asylum seekers in County Galway. Those granted refugee or other status will have access to all of the available accommodation tenures which includes consideration for inclusion in local authority housing waiting lists.
