Vol. 517 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Service Orders.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

245 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of community service orders made by the courts in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10121/00]

I am informed by the Courts Service that the information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

Community Service Orders Imposed

In the District Courts

Legal Year Ending

No. of CSO's Imposed

31 July 1995

3,721

31 July 1996

3,539

31 July 1997

3,393

31 July 1998

4,312

31 July 1999(provisional figures only)

4,227

I understand that community service orders are occasionally made in the Central Criminal Court and Circuit Courts, but I am informed by the courts service that there are no statistics available on these.
I think it is only proper that I should point out to the Deputy that in the course of supplying the material for this reply, the Courts Service drew my attention to the fact that the material supplied to me by the service for reply to the Deputy's question 24286/99 on 23 November 1999 was incomplete. The statistics in that reply referred only to community service orders made in respect of indictable offences dealt with summarily by the District Court and did not incorporate community service orders made in respect of summary offences dealt with by the District Court. I am assured by the Courts Service that the reply to the Deputy's present question is as complete a response as the service can provide.
