Ceist:

75 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that parents of children attending the paediatric haematology unit in Tallaght on 7 March 2000 were informed that the senior haematology registrar attached to the hospital was leaving in three months and was not being replaced and that the paediatric haematology unit was to be transferred to Crumlin Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 107 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will undertake to reiterate the Government's earlier guarantee to the future of the haematology unit at the National Children's Hospital, Tallaght, in terms of location, staff, facilities and the sick children currently being treated there; the action he proposes to take in view of the scheduled departure from this unit of the senior haematology registrar; if he will guarantee that this registrar will be replaced in order to secure the continuing effective functioning of the unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 218 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that parents of children attending the paediatric haematology unit in Tallaght on 7 March 2000 were informed that the senior haematology registrar attached to the hospital was leaving in three months and was not being replaced and that the paediatric haematology unit was to be transferred to Crumlin Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 75, 107 and 218 together.

The matter raised by the Deputy is now the responsibility of the Eastern Regional Health Authority which has overall responsibility for acute hospital services.

Last year a submission was made to my predecessor by medical consultants involved to transfer the paediatric haematology unit in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital incorporating the National Children's Hospital to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. Following this, my Department raised the matter with each of the hospitals concerned. To date, no formal submission has been made to my Department from the hospitals, although I understand they are considering proposals in this regard.
I have had inquiries made and I am informed that the Adelaide and Meath Hospital incorporating the National Children's Hospital is not aware of and has not received notice of resignation from the senior registrar in haematology.
The hospital has further confirmed that no decisions have been taken by it with regard to any transfer of its Haematology Unit to Our Lady's Hospital For Sick Children, Crumlin.
