114 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the breakdown of the recoupment for the provision of accommodation for homeless persons and asylum seekers for 1999; the likely figures for 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10321/00]
My Department recoups 90% of expenditure incurred by local authorities on the pro vision of accommodation for homeless people and 100% of their expenditure on the provision of emergency accommodation for asylum seekers. Recoupments paid in 1999 amounted to £22.195 million of which £9.957 million was in respect of accommodation for homeless persons and £12.238 million in respect of emergency accommodation for asylum seekers.
115 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the estimated cost for the provision of suitable purpose built accommodation to accommodate 300 homeless in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10322/00]
The type of accommodation suitable to meet the needs of homeless persons varies from hostel accommodation to standard local authority housing and it is difficult, therefore, to give a meaningful estimation across the range of accommodation types and locations etc. It is estimated that suitable supportive type accommodation in a unit to cater for 20 single homeless persons would cost in the region of £1 million. A programme to provide a significant number of such units would take a number of years and costs would increase accordingly.
