Ceist:154 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the terms of reference of the investigation (details supplied) being conducted in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10278/00]
Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the person referred to by the Deputy alleged to the Garda that he was the victim of an assault at a nightclub on 30 May 1997. The allegation was subsequently investigated and the directions of the DPP were sought.
I understand that proceedings were commenced by way of summons, and the case first came before the District Court on 13 May 1998. The case was adjourned on several occasions, and finally on 2 December 1998 the District Court Judge dismissed all the charges against the person referred to and the other parties in the case.
As the Deputy will be aware the Judiciary are independent in the exercise of their functions and it would not be appropriate for me to comment on the matter.
