Vol. 517 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

166 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will receive her final payment under a transnational aqua student placement scheme. [10301/00]

The transnational placement scheme in question is operated as part of the EU Leonardo da Vinci programme which is administered on behalf of my Department by Léargas – The Exchange Bureau.

I understand from Léargas that student placement projects under the Leonardo da Vinci programme last for two years, promoters being awarded a set level of funding to support an agreed number of beneficiaries. This funding is paid by the European Commission to the project promoter in three tranches, consequent on the signing of the contract and the acceptance of interim and final reports, respectively. Project promoters pay individual grants to student beneficiaries in a similar fashion, having received payment from the Commission.

In relation to the case raised by the Deputy, 90% of the grant has been paid to the student involved. However, I understand that the Commission had sought additional information from the project promoter in relation to the final report in this case and that payment of the final instalment has consequently been delayed. My Department will endeavour, through Léargas, to ensure that the matter is finalised as quickly as possible in order to facilitate payment of the outstanding 10% of grant support due to the student in question.
