Vol. 517 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

170 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) who was an EPT teacher in a VEC before receiving her degree will be granted incremental credit for her years of service; the procedures or difficulties involved; the way in which the other precedents being quoted within the same VEC and elsewhere were approved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10358/00]

Incremental credit may be granted to teachers in respect of previous service given in a qualified capacity. I understand that the teacher in question was employed in a qualified capacity since the 1997-98 school year and has been granted incremental credit for that service to which she is entitled. Incremental credit is not allowed in respect of her prior service, which was given in an unqualified capacity.

My Department has received correspondence which has raised again the question of the teacher's qualification status prior to 1997-98. I am arranging to have the case reviewed in my Department and a decision notified as soon as possible. In the event that the teacher is not satisfied with the result of the review, it is will be open to her to appeal her case to the qualifications committee established under paragraph 11.5 of the Programme for Competitiveness and Work .
