Vol. 517 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cattle Tests.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

85 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if tests were carried out on cattle and sheep in north Mayo following the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl; if the area is still being monitored; the preliminary results, if any, of the tests; if he will provide a copy of the test results or report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10276/00]

Following the accident at Chernobyl in April 1986, the necessary monitoring and testing of livestock was carried out by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, including tests of sheep in County Mayo. The results of these tests are summarised in the institute's most recently published annual report. I have asked the institute to send a copy of that report and the detailed County Mayo results to the Deputy.
