Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

278 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of science teachers at second level; and if he will give details of those whose primary degrees are in biology, chemistry and physics. [11376/00]

The information requested by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department.

However, on the basis of information sought in relation to the in-career programme for teachers of the new syllabi in leaving certificate physics and leaving certificate chemistry the following were the findings of an analysis of the databases within the Department of Education and Science: the total number of teachers timetabled to teach science is 3216 and the total number of teachers timetabled to teach physics and to teach chemistry is 1372. The number of teachers offered inservice in chemistry was 1028. The number of teachers offered in-service in physics was 944.
