Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

289 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has with regard to the provision of primary and secondary school facilities in addition to that already made for the rapidly developing area of Lucan. [11444/00]

As my predecessor informed the House in response to Question No. 379 on 14 December 1999, my Department has no plans at present to build an additional school in the Lucan area. However, in accordance with normal practice for major urban areas, the situation in Lucan will continue to be monitored to ensure that all pupils seeking a post-primary school place can be facilitated.

Ceist:

290 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the application by St, Joseph's college, Lucan, for an extension and sports centre; and when it is hoped to reach the construction stage as the centre was originally sought over five years ago and the school is in need of additional accommodation. [11445/00]

The school referred to by the Deputy has been advised that a combined stage four, detailed design, and stage five, bill of quantities, may be prepared, incorporating a number of technical requirements identified at stage three of the architectural planning process.

On receipt of the combined stage four-five submission consideration will be given to the question of allowing the project proceed to tender.

Ceist:

291 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the application by Palmerstown community school, Palmerstown, Dublin 20, for a sports hall; the position on the application; and when it is hoped to reach the construction phase of the project. [11446/00]

This project is part of the Government initiative to develop community sports facilities in local drug taskforce areas.

The design team for the project has been apprised of the specifications involved in this project and requested to complete architectural planning as quickly as possible.

It is anticipated that construction will commence later this year.
