Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Funding.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

318 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the financial help available for primary schools where such schools wish to install appropriate security measures to protect the school; the steps the school should take in order to obtain this funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11711/00]

In the case of new schools, design teams are asked to ensure that security considerations are reflected in the architectural planning of the building, particularly in relation to access and relevant costs would be included in the overall tender price for the building project. Other cases are considered by my Department on an individual basis.

Schools may also use the devolved primary grant to pay for security installations. For 2000, the level of the grant will be £3,000 per school plus £10 per pupil.

Funding for these activities is provided from within the annual capital allocation which is £81 million for primary schools in year 2000.
