Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ceist:

322 Mr. Coveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the exemption requirements for dyslexic students for the leaving and junior certificate examinations; and the concessions given to students in this category. [11744/00]

The report and recommendations of the expert advisory group on certificate examinations in relation to the arrangements for the assessment of candidates with special needs in certificate examinations was published recently.

The advisory group identified a set of principles as a basis for dealing with this complex and difficult area. My Department has begun the process of implementing the recommendations and applying the principles to applications on hand for this year's examinations including those for students with specific learning difficulties.

The full text of the report and a circular setting out revised arrangements that will come into effect immediately have been circulated to schools and other interested parties.

I am arranging to have the Deputy provided with copies of these documents which also set out the range of arrangements that can be put in place for such students.
