Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

86 Mr. McGuinness asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if a qualified person is employed in the Department to develop information communication technology systems for use in the Department, on an interdepartmental basis and outwards to conduct business with the general public and public representatives. [11649/00]

My Department employs staff in the information systems, IS, unit with the remit of providing information systems to support the Department's business objectives. Staff in the IS unit are recruited from within the Department or by the Civil Service Commission through specialist IT panels, drawn from within the Civil Service. Some individuals thus recruited may hold some form of computer related qualifications.

My Department does not specifically employ a qualified person to develop ICT systems for use in the Department and outside. In practice, my Department contracts out most systems development work to specialist technology companies. Staff in the IS unit of the Department manage these development projects from systems analysis through to delivery of the system.
