Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishing Vessel Licences.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

97 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources further to Parliamentary Question No. 92 of 4 April 2000, the number of licences granted to applicants proposing to enter into the polyvalent segment vessels fishing for part of the time by means of beam trawls; the name and registered number of each vessel so licensed; and the details of the appropriate proportion of tonnage and engine power with an active history of fishing by means of beam trawls removed from that segment. [11774/00]

As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy's Question No. 92 of 4 April 2000, there are a number of vessels in the polyvalent segment of the Irish fishing fleet which are not precluded by the terms of their sea fishing boat licences from fishing by means of beam trawls, or which are permitted to engage in beam trawling for a proportion of their fishing time. As I have explained in my earlier reply, quantification of the number of vessels involved is under way by my Department as part of a comprehensive analysis of beam trawl entitlements within the polyvalent segment. The aim is to have this analysis completed by mid year and I will revert to the Deputy with the information requested when it is available.
