Vol. 518 No. 3

Written Answers. - Information Technology Systems.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

127 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if a qualified person is employed in the Department to develop information communication technology systems for use in the Department, on an inter Department basis and outwards to conduct business with the general public and public representatives. [11654/00]

My Department has recently completed a comprehensive IT strategy review. This study has made recommendations on all aspects of the delivery of the IT function. These range from identifying new corporate applications and data, new architectural platforms and re-structured IT organisation.

This has led to the appointment in December 1999 of a dedicated director of IT with responsibility for my Department's information systems division.

My Department is committed to the delivery of its services through electronic means. It fully participates in the Information Society Commission's work through the public sector implementation group. A fundamental element in the implementation of the new strategy is to web-enable services on a phased basis. All new applications to be built by the Department will be based on browser technology.
