Ceist:

141 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the funding which will be made available for coastal erosion works in County Mayo; and when he will make an announcement in this regard. [12606/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 139, 140 and 141 together.

Under my Department's coastal protection programme for 2000, I approved the allocation of financial assistance to Mayo County Council for coast protection works at three locations in the county at a total cost of £135,000. County Mayo's coastal protection requirements are being kept under review in the context of overall priorities and the funding available for such works.

It is essential that best value for money is obtained from the significantly increased funding provided for coastal protection under the national development plan. The programme is being developed and implemented in close co-operation with all relevant interests and I have asked my Department to consult with local authorities on the scope for involving community groups in particular and suitable projects.
