272 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the total expenditure in 1999 on the general medical service; and the average total expenditure in respect of each person in the State in 1999. [12341/00]
The total expenditure in 1999 on the general medical services, medical card, scheme was £348,452,430 which relates to fees and allowances paid to general practitioners and pharmacists. Accordingly, the average cost per person was £294.89 on the basis of a population of eligible persons of 1,181,636. The average cost per person would be £291.06 if payments of £4,522,900 to retired district medical officers were to be excluded from the total.
