Vol. 518 No. 6
309 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health and Children the measures he proposes to take to promote equality and prohibit discrimination with regard to children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12507/00]
310 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce a new equal status Bill which will apply to children; if not, the reason therefor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12508/00]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 309 and 310 together.
The promotion of equality and the prohibition of discrimination in relation to children are central aspects of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Ireland has ratified and is implementing.
A national children's strategy is being developed which will reflect the provisions of the UN convention and will address the issues raised by the Deputy. It will set out a range of proposals to advance the welfare and status of children in society. It is intended to publish a strategy in the autumn.
I would also point out that children are encompassed by the definition of a person under the Equal Status Act, 2000.
