Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asylum Seeker Accommodation.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

501 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has acquired or plans to acquire a premises (details supplied) in County Cork to accommodate asylum seekers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13035/00]

My Department has had advertisements placed through the media inviting offers of accommodation suitable for asylum seekers from the commercial sector. Arising from these advertisements, the Directorate for Asylum Support Services has entered into contractual agreements for the provision of full board accommodation in hotels, guest houses and hostels.

In accordance with Government policy, the directorate is currently assessing the potential of accommodation offers in all regions throughout the State. A number of properties are being actively pursued. In line with normal practice, I do not propose to release details of these properties until such time as the arrangements in relation to them have been agreed and relevant formalities concluded with the proprietors.
