Vol. 518 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

524 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow will receive a grant for third level education. [12375/00]

The person to whom the Deputy refers applied to Wicklow County Council for grant assistance under the higher education grant scheme 1999 in order to pursue a post-graduate course at Trinity College, Dublin. Under the terms of the higher education grant scheme, grants may not be paid to candidates who already hold a postgraduate qualification and are pursuing a second postgraduate qualification. I understand that the applicant in question already held a postgraduate qualification and that Wicklow County Council informed the applicant that, on this basis, she was not eligible for grant assistance.

Officials of my Department have confirmed with the University of Edinburgh that the qualification in question, the graduate certificate in secondary teaching obtained at Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, is a postgraduate qualification and, therefore, the applicant is not eligible for grant assistance towards a second post-graduate qualification.
