Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Training Programmes.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

105 Mr. Penrose asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason FÁS will not provide training and-or improved skill courses for people who are in low-skill jobs or other sectors of the economy and who wish to upgrade and improve their skills; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14623/00]

Some 47,000 people started training on a wide variety of FÁS courses in 1999. Some 12,800 of these were early school-leavers with an educational standard of below leaving certificate level.

During 1999, FÁS provided training for 1,934 people on the traineeship programme and 3,887 people on specific skills training. Both of these programmes cover a wide range of occupations.

Both FÁS and Enterprise Ireland are providing support for in-company training across a range of skills and business sectors.

In addition, the skillnets enterprise-led training body has recently approved support for 39 training network projects involving over 2,000 enterprises.

Within the context of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness, the lifelong learning task force, under the aegis of my Department, is examining the need for additional initiatives to promote the upskilling of people in low-skilled jobs.
