Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

108 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the total number employed in the Passport Office in Dublin 2; the number of temporary or non-permanent staff; the average number of persons employed in the Passport Office in Dublin; the average length of time for which non-permanent staff have been employed; the reason these staff have not been made permanent; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14625/00]

A total of 81 permanent staff and 54 Temporary Clerical Officers are employed in the Dublin Passport Office. During 1999 an average of 124 staff were employed in that office. The average length of time for which the TCOs currently employed have worked in the Passport Office is 6.5 years. Confined competitions have been held from time to time by the Civil Service Commission to offer the opportunity of permanent civil service employment for TCOs. The Department is currently in discussion with the Department of Finance about the possibility of holding a further competition confined to TCOs.
