Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

109 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to incidents of radon gas at various locations throughout the country; the action, if any, she proposes to take in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14746/00]

I refer the Deputy to my response to previous parliamentary questions I have replied to regarding radon gas, most recently my responses to Questions Nos. 101 on 18 April 2000 and 203 on 21 March 2000.

As I have previously pointed out, the Government has committed significant resources to assessing the extent of the radon problem throughout the country and in highlighting public awareness of radon.

Along with the RPII, I have encouraged householders in those areas designated as high radon areas and who have not had their homes measured for radon levels to contact the RPII with a view to having the radon levels in their homes assessed.
I recently signed an order which provides for the implementation of Council Directive 96/29/Euratom of 13 May 1996 laying down basic safety standards for the protection of the health of workers and the general public against the dangers arising from ionising radiation. This legislation, which came into effect on 13 May 2000, applies to all work activities affected by radiation exposure including workplaces where radon is a problem.
While the Government is not a position to provide direct financial assistance to householders in the current year, I will continue to take an active role in monitoring progress on tackling the radon problem in households. I will also encourage the RPII in its public awareness campaigns.
