Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

139 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce a change in the regulations so that pensioners over 70 years of age, who must obtain a medical certificate from their GP to renew their driving license, can have the medical certificate provided on their medical card; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13350/00]

The general medical services scheme provides a treatment and curative service for medical card patients, including the provision of normal sick ness certificates. The scheme does not extend to the issue of certificates relating to such matters as driving licences, insurance or assurance policies and I have no plans, at present to extend the scheme to cover such certificates either generally or in respect of a particular age category.
