Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - General Practitioners.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

172 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will take into consideration the views of the Irish College of General Practitioners which believes that the present title of general practitioner should be retained and that attempts to change the title to family doctor should be resisted. [14700/00]

The background to this matter is that it arose at a European level and represents an attempt to standardise throughout Europe the descriptive term that best describes what general practice and a general practitioner is about. I understand that the Medical Council wrote to the Irish College of General Practitioners on this matter which was subsequently discussed at the recent annual conference of the college where it was decided to support the retention of the term general practitioner. I have no difficulty in taking into consideration the views of the college on this matter to the extent that it falls within my remit.
