Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

202 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has studied correspondence (details supplied) in relation to the future development of Doneraile Court, County Cork; her plans for this historical building; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14610/00]

I am considering the future of Doneraile Court and I hope to make an announcement in July.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

203 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason the promised programme of work has not commenced at Carlow Castle; if the site will be cleaned and cleared of overgrowth to allow public access; if she will consider a major scheme for this site and feature it as a flag ship site for tourism in Carlow town; if she will consider funding for the project in 2001; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14611/00]

The programme of works planned for Carlow Castle has been delayed due to difficulties concerning ownership of small areas of land surrounding the castle. Discussions have taken place with the relevant landowners and I understand that these difficulties are now almost resolved. These works including clearing the site to allow public access, substantial landscaping and provision of interpretative panels are planned to commence mid-summer and be completed by the end of this year. When completed, I am confident that the works will have considerably enhanced the monument and the site will be a major additional attraction to Carlow town and its environs.
