Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Points Commission.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

219 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the recommendations of the Points Commission to abolish the compensation marks for answering through Irish in State examinations. [14673/00]

The Final Report and Recommendations of the Commission on the Points System was published in December last. The culmination of two years of intensive research, discussion and debate, it covers a wide range of issues and includes many recommendations on various complex issues.

This wide-ranging report requires detailed analysis in view of the number, scope and importance of the recommendations. The commission's recommendation in relation to the abolition of bonus marks for answering through Irish in State examinations is currently being given careful consideration by senior officials in my Department, and will be dealt with in the context of an overall implementation strategy. I shall consider carefully all aspects of this issue before making a final decision on the commission's recommendations.
