Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Hospital Accommodation.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

53 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Health and Children the terms of reference for the research on bed capacity com missioned by the EPHA; and the timeframe for completion. [14531/00]

The Deputy will be aware that the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness provides for a national review of bed capacity in acute and non-acute settings. As part of this review the Eastern Regional Health Authority has commissioned a study to assess existing bed capacity within the eastern region and to project future needs. The objective of the study is to determine future requirements based on: good standards of efficiency and performance; population characteristics; medical and health care developments.

The study will analyse the bed use within the region for the past five years and identify the key factors influencing activity. The study will also examine international comparisons and review the efficiency and performance of current bed capacity. The study will forecast the number of beds and any changes needed in this regard in Eastern Regional Health Authority hospitals. I expect to receive the report in the coming weeks.
