Vol. 519 No. 6

Written Answers. - Suicide Incidence.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

67 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to a recent UK study which showed that doctors were up to five times more likely to commit suicide than the general population and have a much higher incidence of depression, alcohol and drug abuse; and the proposals if any, he has to deal with such problems. [14548/00]

A number of studies claim to have produced results along the lines referred to in the Deputy's question. The same results are found among other professions whose members work in highly responsible or stressful conditions. The health service has to be concerned about the health of its own employees if it is to deliver effective services to the general population. The Health Service Employers Agency is examining the introduction of an occupational health service in health agencies. Most major hospitals already have such a service but an effort needs to be made to ensure that all health service employees have access to a properly structured and resourced service.
