Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Board Services.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

172 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the steps he will take to avert a planned strike by doctors involved in the methadone treatment programme. [16432/00]

The provision of drug treatment services in the eastern region is the statutory responsibility of the eastern Regional Health Authority. However, I understand that the issues in question relate to negotiations between the Eastern Regional Health Authority and general practitioners in relation to a contract for the provision of services to drug misusers in health board clinics. The management of the drug service of the authority has been in contact with representatives of the general practitioners and I understand that a meeting took place on 9 June 2000 to progress a number of issues raised by the general practitioners. Arrangements have been made to have a follow on review of matters which were not finalised at that date. General practitioners are continuing to provide a full range of services in the clinics.
