Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Medical Insurance Costs.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

185 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans he has to address the situation where Irish doctors are being denied extra insurance benefits offered to their UK colleagues because of current litigation costs. [16446/00]

The two UK-based medical defence organisations, which operate in Ireland, have always offered the same level of cover to their UK and Irish workers. However, for many years they have charged different levels of subscriptions to reflect the relative costs of meeting claims in the two jurisdictions. One of the defence bodies has recently entered into an arrangement with a commercial insurance company to provide insurance cover to its UK workers. The level of cover available to Irish workers remains unchanged and is at least equal to, if not better than, that available to UK doctors.
