Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prison Staff.

John Perry

Ceist:

250 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will intervene on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo and have a favourable decision made on his appointment to the Garda Prison Service in view of the fact he already secured a placement and taking into consideration the fact that he is well aware of the challenges with this appointment as three members of his family are gardaí; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16400/00]

The selection of candidates for both the Garda Síochána and the Prison Service is done by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission. That body was established to ensure that the selection of candidates would be based on merit and without political favouritism.

I would point out that any canvassing on behalf of a candidate is liable to lead to his or her disqualification by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission.
