Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

293 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of the fact that a person suffering from brittle bone syndrome (details supplied) in County Wexford will need the services of a personal assistant when she starts primary school in September 2000, he will accept and process an application for sanction of a personal assistant for this child now in order that the necessary advertising, interviewing, selection and training of an appropriate person for this position can be completed before the start of the school year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16654/00]

My Department has not received an application for special educational support for the child in question.

In order that my Department may be able to respond to the needs of the child, all relevant professional reports relating to the child's special needs should be forwarded by the school to the local primary inspector. Upon receipt of this information, the case will be processed and any necessary support will be put in place.
