Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tribunals of Inquiry.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

50 Ms McManus asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the plans, if any, she has to appoint an inspector to carry out an investigation into the affairs of a company (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16520/00]

I have no plans at present to carry out an investigation of the company concerned. I will await the outcome of the tribunal of inquiry, payments to Messrs Haughey and Lowry, before considering what action, if any, would be appropriate on my part. I will obviously take into account at that time any adverse comment which may be made on the company concerned in the tribunal's report. This decision will also have regard to the statutory powers available to me to investigate companies under Part II of the Companies Act, 1990.

This is consistent with the approach I adopted during the tribunal of inquiry, Dunnes payments, where I awaited the tribunal's report before deciding if intervention on my part was justified.
