Vol. 521 No. 1

Written Answers. - Employment Statistics.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

109 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of workers from overseas, other than returning emigrants, who have been attracted to employment in this country in each of the past three years; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16736/00]

Preliminary figures based on CSO population and migration Estimates, April 1999, published in October 1999, suggest that the number of immigrants, other than Irish nationals, in each of the years 1997 to 1999 were 23,500, 20,800 and 21,600 respectively. Therefore in years 1998 and 1999, less than half – 47.5% and 45.5% respectively – of all immigrants were non-Irish nationals. Information is not currently available from the CSO on the contribution to employment of non-Irish immigrants in the years 1997 to 1999.
