Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

141 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of applicants in County Kerry who are in receipt of rent allowance; the amount paid out in rent allowance each week; and the number of houses involved. [16897/00]

The supplementary welfare allowance – SWA – scheme provides for a weekly or monthly supplement to be paid in respect of rent to any person in the State whose means are insufficient to meet their needs. Rent supplements are currently being paid to 1,022 people in County Kerry at a cost of £40,000 per week. Details of the number of houses involved are not available.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

142 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a decision will be reached on the disability benefit appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16898/00]

The person concerned is appealing against the decision of the deciding officer to refuse his claim to disability benefit on the grounds that the loss of hearing suffered by him is less than the prescribed minimum of 50 decibels in each ear. Following the oral hearing of his appeal, further medical reports, including audiograms, were submitted by the person in support of his claim. The case is now being referred to an appeals officer for determination. His decision will be notified to the person in the near future.
