Ceist:

144 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consult with the Garda Commissioner concerning the provision of additional gardaí for the town in order to allay the concerns of residents regarding the increased incidence of crime arising from the growing problem of underage drinking in Carrick-on-Suir; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ceist:

149 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if, in view of the ongoing problem of underage drinking in Carrick-on-Suir, he will consult with the Garda Commissioner concerning the provision of additional gardaí for the town to allay the concerns of its residents regarding the increased incidence of crime arising from this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 144 and 149 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel to individual areas, that the current personnel strength of Carrick-on-Suir Garda station is 16, all ranks. There are also two official vehicles allocated to the station and local resources are augmented from within the district and division as the need arises. I am also informed that particular attention is paid by local Garda management towards ensuring that the law in relation to the sale of intoxicating liquor to minors is complied with. In that regard, the Deputy will be aware that my legislative proposals to tackle underage drinking which include severe penalties for the supply and sale of alcohol to minors are currently awaiting finalisation in the House.

I am further informed that local Garda management is satisfied that the best possible Garda service is being provided in Carrick-on-Suir with the current deployment of resources. The policing situation there is, however, kept under continuing review and changes made as necessary. When additional resources next become available, the needs of Carrick-on-Suir will be fully considered in the overall context of the needs of other Garda divisions-districts throughout the country.
