Vol. 521 No. 2

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

45 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the total extra acreage proposed for afforestation in the current year; the extent to which this will be a replacement for harvested forests; the anticipated annual economic benefit from the forestry industry currently and over the next ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16727/00]

It is estimated that 14,000 hectares of grant-aided afforestation will be planted this year. In addition, it is estimated that a further 7,000 hectares of harvested forests will be replanted in 2000.

The national development plan provides for funding of IR£500 million under the afforestation programme and a further IR£102 million for the structural development of the sector over the period 2000-06. The gross output of the sector is estimated at IR£355 million this year and is growing at an annual rate of 5%.

The Deputy will also be aware of the significant role forestry is expected to play in meeting Ireland's objectives under the Kyoto protocol.
