Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Court Cases.

David Stanton

Ceist:

257 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will take action to ensure that a case (details supplied) before the Circuit Criminal Court will be heard as soon as possible; the date charges were first brought in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17627/00]

The Deputy will appreciate that, as the courts are, subject only to the Constitution and the law, independent in the exercise of their judicial functions, I cannot intervene in any way in any case before the courts.

It would not be proper for me to comment on the conduct of any case, which includes the granting of adjournments, as this is a matter entirely for the presiding judge.

I can inform the Deputy that this case was first before the Circuit Court on 27 October 1999 and currently stands adjourned to 21 June 2000.
