Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

276 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, in relation to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kerry; if the matters raised in Parliamentary Question No. 406 of 28 March 2000 and Parliamentary Question No. 325 of 23 May 2000 have been addressed; if the promised report is available; the action it suggests; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17170/00]

The needs of the pupil referred to by the Deputy have been investigated by my Department's inspectorate. The pupil in question receives additional teaching support through the remedial and resource teacher service based in the school.

Following consideration of the inspector's report, it is considered that additional funding for computer equipment is not warranted at this time. However, I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the school, which the pupil in question attends, received the IT2000 grant of £700 towards the cost of hardware-software for the resource teacher from my Department in the last week.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

277 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo who suffers from dyslexia will be assessed; the reason the person has not been assessed; the assistance which will be given to him, particularly as he will be commencing secondary school; and when Departmental officials will meet the person, his teachers and his parents to discuss his educational development. [17192/00]

During the development phase of the national educational psychological service, pupils in schools, not yet served by NEPS and who require an urgent psychological assessment, should be referred to the appropriate health board. It would appear that the pupil in question will be commencing secondary school in September 2000. If this is the case and he has not had an assessment by that time, then he should be referred to NEPS through his secondary school. All secondary schools have access to a designated psychologist from NEPS. This psychologist will also meet his teachers and parents to discuss his educational needs and remediation programme.
