19 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will have consideration made into assigning a pilot research project to Moville, County Donegal to examine the causes and effects of radon on the community in view of the recent results of the national radon survey; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 107 on 6 October 1999.
On that occasion I said that the monitoring of radiation levels including the monitoring of radon gas levels is a statutory function of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and is not a matter in which my Department is directly involved.
While I am aware of the suggested link between radon inhalation and cancer any detailed research into such effects is outside my remit.
