Vol. 521 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Liam Aylward

Ceist:

63 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the ongoing dredging operation taking place on the River Barrow between Goresbridge and Ballytiglea Bridge on the Carlow-Kilkenny border which has very serious consequences for fishing in view of the fact it has totally destroyed angling on the river; the steps, he will take to ensure that this process does not continue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17536/00]

I am informed by Waterways Ireland that it is carrying out maintenance dredging and bank stabilisation works on the River Barrow between Goresbridge and Ballytiglea Bridge in the interest of navigation. These current works commenced in 1998 and are due to be completed this year.

The Southern Regional Fisheries Board, which has statutory responsibility for the protection of fisheries within its fisheries region which includes the area in question, informs me that it is in ongoing consultation with Waterways Ireland and that the works are being carried out with due regard for the fisheries interest.
