67 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he received a submission from the Wild Salmon Support Group in April 2000; and if so, if he will accede to the group's request for a meeting to discuss the issues which are of extreme concern to them. [17594/00]
I can confirm that I received a submission from the Wild Salmon Support Group in February 2000 regarding the management of the wild salmon resource and proposing in particular a reduction in the commercial fishing effort. I would be glad to meet the group to discuss its concerns and I have asked my office to arrange a meeting at the earliest opportunity.
Since coming into office I have established the National Salmon Commission with the function of assisting and advising me on salmon management policy. The Wild Salmon Support Group is represented on the commission. I have requested the commission to advise me on a range of specific conservation and management priorities including the issues highlighted by the support group.
