Vol. 521 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

108 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans if any he has to privatise the driving test system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17862/00]

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

110 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans he has to review the driving test; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17864/00]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 108 and 110 together.

I have already recently announced, in response to the publication of the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the driving test service, my intention to commission a consultancy review of the organisation and delivery of driver testing. Proposals have been obtained from consultants for this purpose and are being evaluated.

I intend that the review process will be open in character and will include full consultation with service users, staff and other interests. While the possibility of privatised arrangements is likely to be among the options to be considered by the review, there is no question of particular solutions being given preference at this stage.

Ceist:

109 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the waiting time for driving tests in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17863/00]

The current longest waiting times for driving tests in the Dublin area are 46 weeks in the Finglas-Raheny centre and 37 weeks in the Churchtown-Rathgar-Tallaght centre. In relation to measures being taken to reduce waiting times, I refer to the reply to Question No. 24 of 25 May, 2000.
