The specific food- related initiatives set out in the National Development Plan 2000-2006 are market-oriented ones. While these are directed at the food industry rather than at its market outlets, they take account of developments in the retail and food services sectors. The total indicative public funding allocation of £282 million will be provided as follows: £120 million for capital investment; £83 million for research, technology and innovation; £48 million for marketing and promotion; and £31 million to address the human resources needs of the food industry.
In the context of the restaurant sector, Bord Bia continues to work closely with restaurateurs and restaurant organisations at home and abroad. This is in line with the board's overall aim to increase sales of Irish food and drink. The activities undertaken by Bord Bia as part of its marketing and promotion work include seminars for chefs, tailor-made restaurant promotions, and ongoing advisory programmes. The board has, for example, worked closely with the catering industry in preparing the Féile Bia 2000, which will be launched next week. The Féile is an important showcase for Irish cuisine and emphasises the role of the restaurant sector in promoting Irish food and drink.
